　渋沢栄一の改革者としての精神やビジョンを踏まえた渋沢記念日本研究国際セミナーが、渋沢青淵記念財団竜門社（現・渋沢栄一記念財団）、国際文化会館、米国ミズーリ州セントルイスのミズーリ州立大学国際センターの共催で、1999年から2004年まで5回開催された。全体のテーマは「日本の挑戦（Challenges for Japan）」。本書はその第4回の論文集。セミナー開催に関わったポートランド州立大学ギル・ラッツ教授のご縁で、ポートランド州立大学刊行の雑誌に掲載された。
