2004年9月9日に米国ミズーリ大学セントルイス校で行われた、「Different lands/shared experiences = 日米実業史競（にちべいじつぎょうしくらべ）」と題するシンポジウムの報告書。このシンポジウムは、渋沢史料館、ミズーリ大学セントルイス・マーカンタイル・ライブラリー、同大学セントルイス校国際教育センターが共同で企画した展覧会「日米実業史競」の、オープニングセレモニーの一環として開催されたもの。同日から10月2日まで開催された展覧会のテーマは、19世紀から20世紀初めにかけての日米両国での近代化、産業化の歩みを視覚的に比較するというもので、シンポジウムもこのテーマに沿って、4つのセッションが行われた。
各セッションでは19世紀半ば以降の近代工業社会の誕生について、人々はどのような追憶を持っているか、そして文化的現象としての近代的工業化を我々はどう解釈するか、という問題が日米それぞれの視点から論じられた。本書はシンポジウムで発表された5本の報告の内容を英文で記録したもので、各タイトル抄訳は「セントルイス博覧会前の日米関係」「19世紀米国の小企業と大企業」「19世紀日本の経済改革の基盤」「20世紀初頭の米国の日本人作家」「日米文化交流の近代化」である。表紙には錦絵「東京高輪鉄道蒸気車走行之全図」（渋沢史料館所蔵）と、蒸気船が描かれたセントルイス南銀行の5ドル紙幣（セントルイス・マーカンタイル・ライブラリー所蔵）が使われている。
